Birth Doula FAQs
Common Questions About Working with a Certified Birth Doula
Birth is a life-changing moment, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. If you’re considering working with a certified birth doula in Baltimore, explore the FAQs below, reach out by email, or schedule a free discovery call to talk about the kind of birth support that would help you feel held, informed, and supported in the moments that matter most.
During your prenatal visits, we take time to thoughtfully prepare for your birth experience. As your birth doula, I’ll review your health history, birth priorities, day-of logistics, pain-management options, newborn procedures, and postpartum preparation. I also provide referrals and trusted community resources in the Baltimore area when needed. The goal of these visits is to ensure you feel informed, prepared, and confident as you approach labor and delivery.
That’s very common. My role as your birth doula is to support you—not a specific outcome. If plans change—whether that means an induction, epidural, or cesarean—I stay with you, help you understand what’s happening, provide steady emotional and physical labor support, and help you navigate decisions so you continue to feel informed, respected, and supported throughout your birth.
Yes. I support both planned and unplanned cesareans as part of my birth doula services. This can include helping you prepare emotionally before surgery, supporting you and your partner before and after the procedure, and helping you process the experience afterward so you feel grounded and cared for.
I work with your partner, not instead of them. As your birth doula, I help partners feel confident, included, and useful by offering guidance, reassurance, and practical suggestions for providing meaningful labor support. I also step in when they need rest or a short break so they can remain present and supported themselves.
No. I am not a medical provider and I do not perform clinical tasks. Your medical team manages your medical care. My role as a certified birth doula is to focus entirely on your comfort, emotional support, information, and advocacy so you feel supported and confident throughout the entire birth process.
I’m on-call for you starting at the agreed-upon time in your contract (typically around 38 weeks). If your baby arrives earlier or later, we’ll adjust as needed, and I will support you within those agreed parameters. My goal is to provide consistent, dependable birth support when you need it most.
We’ll discuss early labor signs during your prenatal visits so you know when to contact me. I usually join you once labor becomes active and hands-on labor support is most beneficial. From there, I stay continuously until after your baby is born and you feel settled.
Yes. I support both spontaneous labor and medically indicated inductions. Inductions can sometimes be longer and more intense, and continuous birth doula support can be especially helpful for comfort, pacing, emotional reassurance, and informed decision-making throughout the process.
Yes. I remain with you for a short period after birth to support those first moments, assist with initial feeding if desired, and ensure you feel settled before I leave. My goal is for you to feel steady, supported, and cared for as you begin your first hours with your baby.
